Game Overview
Baccarat is one of the most elegant and straightforward casino card games, offering players a simple yet engaging experience. The primary objective in baccarat is to predict which hand will achieve a total closest to nine: the Player's hand, the Banker's hand, or a Tie. The game uses standard 52-card decks, typically between six and eight decks shuffled together in a shoe.
Card Values and Hand Totals
In baccarat, cards are valued differently than traditional poker. Number cards 2 through 9 maintain their face value, while 10s, face cards (Jack, Queen, King), and Aces are worth zero points. When a hand's total exceeds nine, only the final digit matters. For example, a King and an 8 totals 18, which counts as 8 in baccarat. Understanding this scoring system is fundamental to recognizing winning hands and making informed betting decisions.
The Deal and Gameplay
The game begins with the Player and Banker each receiving two cards. A third card may be drawn based on specific rules that determine whether the hand totals are too low. Unlike blackjack, players have no decisions to make after initial cards are dealt—the drawing rules are automatic. The hand closest to nine wins. If both hands tie at the same total, those who bet on the Tie win at higher odds, typically 8:1 or 9:1 depending on the establishment.
